In my years of money-saving experience, I’ve found there are levels of deal hunting insanity. Which one are you?
Level One: While shopping at Target, there’s a “spend $25, get a $5 gift card.” You spend more money than you planned just to get that gift card. It was spur of the moment, and you put zero thought into it. You mentally congratulate yourself all day for what a great deal that was.
Level Two: You load up your apps and grab your coupons before hitting the store. You try to stick to the list and end up saving a whopping $5-$10 on your $100 grocery bill. On the way home, you hit Starbucks, because you earned it.
Level Three: You know exactly how much things cost and you laugh at the store’s “deals” because YOU’RE NOT FOOLIN ME! You tell a stranger at the store, “you can get that for less down the street.”
Level Four: Deals are a way of life. Not only do you know the price of items you buy weekly, you stock up on items at the end of the season, you are a wizard of the clearance rack, and you can calculate price per ounce in your head.
Good news: Wherever you’re at, there’s always room for improvement!
I’m currently somewhere between a 3 and a 4 because at this point in my life, TIME IS MONEY. There’s no point in going to 3 different grocery stores if I’m going to LOSE MY MIND in every aisle because my kids are with me. I’ll spend that extra $5 just to save me from the brink of insanity.
But if you’re looking for some good ways to keep up on deals, here’s my first tip:
Check deal websites every day. When you wake up, check email, facebook, instagram, and your deal sites. Download your favorite deal apps and set alerts so you’ll get notified when your favorite item is listed. I’ve saved a million dollars on Clif Bars this way (we eat appx 249/week).
Here are some of my favorites:
1. SlickDeals.net This is my favorite. Users submit deals and hardcore savers comment on them. The most popular deals will be on the front page and trending deals are listed on the side. I’ve used slickdeals to purchase 8 pairs of shoes for $16 before. Free shipping. I kid you not.
2. TheKrazyCouponLady.com This chick will be your new best friend. She posts about awesome deals happening now at different stores. Everything from clothes to shoes to whatever, it’s there. But check her often, the deals go quick.
3. GottaDeal.com – New and amazing deals every day. Maybe things you need, maybe things you don’t. But whatever it is, it’s a heck of a deal.
